Rising Tide
Rising Tide is a research techniques training program that supports Caltech's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by increasing accessibility to our undergraduate research and graduate programs. The program is extended to, but not limited to, first generation college students, educationally or financially disadvantaged students, underserved students, women, geographically underrepresented students, and students with disabilities. Applicants will be asked to discuss how their lived experience has impacted their educational journey and how participation in Rising Tide will help them achieve their academic goals and contribute to Caltech's commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment.
Rising Tide Scholars will receive chemistry research techniques training from Caltech graduate students or postdoctoral scholars. The research techniques training will focus on a few primary research areas, including synthetic and analytical chemistry, computational or theoretical chemistry, and biochemistry.
The 2025 Rising Tide program dates are TBD.
Rising Tide Scholars will be given an award for their participation in the program. The 2025 Rising Tide program award is $4,770 for the six-week period.
Rising Tide Scholars will:
- Carry out their work full-time throughout the program
- Work under the guidance of Caltech graduate students and post-doctoral scientists to learn fundamental research skills
- Keep a detailed laboratory notebook during the program
- Attend academic and professional development workshops focused on developing a research career, effective writing and oral communications, and other topics of interest to future researchers
- Write a summary report of the techniques learned in the program
- Receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program
Applications for the 2025 program will open in March.
