Please join us in celebrating the beginning of the 2017 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) season. Since 1979, SURF has been providing students with the extraordinary opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of experienced mentors working at the frontiers of their fields. Approximately 80% of Caltech students do at least one SURF project. This year, we expect to support nearly 400 students in the program.

Each year SURF is dedicated to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the program, our students, and the Institute. This year we honor Dr. David Baltimore, the Roberts Andrew Millikan Professor of Biology, Nobel Laureate, and President Emeritus. Since 1999, he has mentored 63 SURF projects. During his presidency, Dr. Baltimore was a strong supporter of SURF, often sharing the story of how his own undergraduate research experience impacted his academic and career path. Under his leadership the decision was made to include SURF in the There's Only One campaign, which raised over $10 in endowment funding for the program. We are thrilled to recognize him in this way!
