Class of 2025 | Geobiology + Biology
Torrance, California
Emma is from Torrance, one of the beach cities of Southern California. She enjoys many outdoorsy activities, such as (actual) surfing, biking on the beach, ice skating, and skiing. In her free time at Caltech, she enjoys exploring all of the coffee and boba shops nearby and driving up to the local mountains to sketch and paint. As a double major in geobiology and biology, Emma has explored research in both of those fields, having completed three SURFs so far: one with Professor Victoria Orphan on deep-sea hydrothermal vent microbes and the others with Professor Dianne Newman on bacteria that produce greenhouse gases in the California desert. Feel free to reach out to her with any questions about what research in either of these fields can look like or for any help related to the SURF program!
